Photo opportunity:  Dress Rehearsal, Monday May 21 4:30-7pm, 1111 Broad Street, Grafton WI

(Grafton, WI)  The North Shore Academy of the Arts (NSAA) Jr. Stagekids will be presenting “Willy Wonka KIDS” on Wednesday May 30 at 5pm.  The 45 minute show is open to the public.  Donations will be collected at the door for admission.

“This particular show is unique because it is the first ‘Show in a Month’ that the performing arts department has tackled.  There were just four rehearsals at 2.5 hours each and then a dress rehearsal.  The children have worked very hard to memorize the material at home.  We thought we would like to try a shortened rehearsal time based on what other children’s theater companies have tried”, says Producer/Director Angela Mack.

The Jr. Stagekids Program is part of NSAA’s spiraling curriculum in the performing arts.  The Jr. Stagekids level is for ages 6 to 11 and helps to promote confidence, introductory acting, singing and choreography skills.  NSAA is currently enrolling for its summer Jr. Stagekids production, “Disney’s Winnie the Pooh”.  As with “Willy Wonka KIDS”, the show will be produced and directed by Angela Mack of Grafton.  Registrations are taken online through www.northshoreacademyofthearts.com.  The registrations office can be reached at info@northshoreacademyofthearts.org or 262.377.3514.

After several years in the Jr. Stagekids Program, young actors move up to the Stagekids level which is for grades 2 through 12.  Performances are held at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center.  The students are taught by a team of professionals such as an acting coach, choreographer, vocal director, costume designer and more.  The final production is semi-professional and is performed for school groups as well as general audiences.  NSAA is currently enrolling for its 2012 production “Disney’s The Little Mermaid”.

“Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, which features the songs from the classic family film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The memorable score features “The Candy Man”, “Pure Imagination”, “Oompa Loompa” and ”I Want it Now” by Academy® and Grammy® award winners Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, neatly fitted into a new script adapted under the auspices of the Dahl Estate. With a flexible cast size, featuring roles for children and a tour-de-force role in the title character.” – MTI Shows

The NSAA Arts Mill announces “INNER-ACTION: An Interactive Pulled Painting Event with Matthew Reilly and Friends”.  Matthew will be creating the largest known PULLED PAINTING in the world.  The event is open to the public and will take place on Saturday, May 19th, 2012 from 6-11pm at the NSAA’s Arts Mill – 1300 14th Avenue Grafton, WI 53024.

(Grafton, WI) The NSAA Arts Mill in Grafton (1300 14th Avenue, Grafton, WI 53024) is pleased to announce a special interactive art event open and free to the public.

“INNER-ACTION: An Interactive Pulled Painting Event with Mathew Reilly and Friends” is a free and fun event for all ages featuring a live demonstration on how to create Matthew’s original concept of the “Pulled Paint”©Matthew Reilly 2000. Matthew will be creating the largest known “Pulled Painting”© Matthew Reilly 2000 and will get, those wanting, to be involved in the process. He will be lecturing on his original process while creating a 6 foot by 9 foot interactive piece. He will show a lifetime and large body of his work on the 3rd floor of the Arts Mill. This event, for all participating artists and guests, will include free live music and refreshments for sale.

Matthew Reilly is a Grafton, WI native who graduated from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. He has owned his own custom remodeling business, Matthew Reilly Carpentry, for 30 years. He was recently selected as one of the chosen artists to paint for the Village of Grafton Paramount Plaza Banner Project. His studio is located in the Arts Mill and he played a key role in renovating the Historic Grafton Mill. He teaches “Experimental Painting Techniques” through NSAA.

Matthew describes his original “Pulled Paint Technique”© Matthew Reilly 2000 as being similar to work of action painter Jackson Pollock. “It’s a balance between friction and gravity and when the two get pulled apart something natural takes place and I begin to manipulate the paint. Then, I like to let people see what they want to see in the final abstract product. Art should be interactive. I use everyday common materials in my process and the idea for this technique was birthed when I wanted to see an Oriental rug design in my large hallway and decided to drip one.”

Located in the Historic Grafton Mill building, the NSAA Arts Mill features artists’ studios, boutique & gallery/banquet space. The public can walk in to the one-of-a-kind cooperative, see studio artists ‘live’ at work, browse through our art gallery and shop the Arts Mill Boutique featuring wonderful handmade home and personal accessories as well as antique furniture. A portion of the profits from NSAA’s Art Mill help fund arts programming through their satellite location, The North Shore Academy of the Arts.

The NSAA Arts Mill is a division of the North Shore Academy of the Arts, a Wisconsin not-for-profit company dedicated to offering high caliber opportunities in the performing, visual and literary arts to all ages.

Former NSAA Musical Theater Student Receives 7 Superior Ratings at Regional Solo Ensemble

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

by Angela Mack 3/29/12

Andrew Minkin is a sixteen year old from Mequon who became involved with the North Shore Academy of the Arts (NSAA) when he was in 3rd grade.  Since then, he has been in at least nine NSAA productions.

Recently, Andrew played the lead role of Pippin in Homestead High School’s Pippin.  This year, the regional Solo Ensemble competition was held at Homestead High School.  Andrew sang three solos and was in five ensembles.  Of those eight songs, Andrew received seven “One Stars” which is the highest rating that can be obtained.

Some of his solos included “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin, “Bright is the Ring of Words” by Von Williams and “Pie Jesu” by Bethany Zamora.

Andrew continues to be an asset to NSAA as a volunteer in the performing arts and marketing departments.  Currently, he is assisting as a vocal coach and director’s assistant in NSAA’s Stagekids Production of Seussical.  Andrew also works at The Rave/Eagles Club in Milwaukee as a marketing assistant promoting Rap shows and working with their booking agent.

Andrew would like to pursue musical theater as an actor after high school.  He has been looking at Oklahoma University as well as Boise State University.  He is currently auditioning for the Sound of Music at the Skylight Musical Theatre in Milwaukee.

NSAA is proud of Andrew and the leader that he has become and wishes him success in all that he does.  We see a bright future for him!  Imagine…Discover…Create…Dream Andrew!

NSAA Alumni Makes Impact in Israel

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Jerusalem, Israel) Mequon native Talia Lakritz, former NSAA Gleek Club member and singer/songwriter student of NSAA instructor Angela Mack is making a musical mark in Israel.  After she graduated from high school, she decided to go oversees for a year and spend some time in Jerusalem.  She has been involved with writing more music, winning awards and benefiting underprivileged women in Israel.  We are very proud of her! Her singing group recently won FIRST PLACE in the KEDMA competition!

She writes Ms. Mack, “I’ve been involved in so many musical projects lately!  I’ve written more songs since I’ve been here, and I won studio time in an auction that we had so I’ll be able to record some of them! And girl in my apartment plays guitar and writes her own songs, so we’ve been working on one together.

I also co-headed my school’s choir for an inter-seminary competition. The event was last night, and guess what? We won!! I wrote part of the song and helped compile the rest of it (we used a few existing tunes) and teach it so it was very validating. I attached a picture of us with our award. The performance was set in the times of the Holy Temple, with priests dancing the Temple service. I hope we can meet again when I come back in June! -Talia”

Fifty five southeastern Wisconsin children, ages 6 to 11, will be presenting the musical ANNIE Kids on December 5 at 5pm and 7pm.  The musical will be about 45 minutes long and held at the North Shore Academy of the Arts (NSAA), 1111 Broad Street Grafton, WI.  Admission is free and open to the public however donations will be collected at the door.

The NSAA Jr. Stagekids Program is directed by Angela Mack who is also the Marketing Director for NSAA.  “The Jr. Stagekids program is part of a spiraling and growing musical curriculum at NSAA.  Typically children enter through our Pre-K “Imagine Me” program, move onto “Stage-Kinder-Kids”, then Jr. Stagekids, Stagekids and all the way up to the adult level,” said Mack who has also played “Motormouth Maybelle” in Hairspray and “Narrator” in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center (CPAC).

Pictured above is the “Green Cast” Annie played by 4th grader Claire Holtebeck.  “Claire has been singing, dancing and acting since she could move and speak,” commented her mom Lisa.  “In her free time, she makes up commercials and videotapes herself for YouTube.  Claire also loves playing soccer and hanging with friends and family.  She is VERY excited to be a part of ‘Annie’–a lifelong dream!”

The “Purple Cast” Annie is played by an eight year old Greta Dane from Cedarburg (pictured above).  Greta was also recently cast as the lead in a traveling theater group based out of Milwaukee, WI.  “Greta is a pretty amazing kid…I have raised her to believe that she can do anything she wants if she puts her mind to it and I have yet to see her prove me wrong.  She loves to sing and spends time composing her own songs.  She also plays and loves piano and got an electric guitar for her 8th birthday last month which she is slowly teaching herself how to play. Her role as Annie is her first shot at acting”, said her mom Sharon.

NSAA is now registering for their 2012 productions which include Stagekids Seussical (target ages 2nd through 8th grade), Aladdin Kids, Willy Wonka Kids and a brand new 30-minute comedy for the middle schooled called “School Daze”.    Online registration and discounts are now being offered on the NSAA website. www.northshoreacademyofthearts.org

Arts project with Homestead students spotlights foster care, youth who must leave system at age 18

Monday, April 25th, 2011

By Linda J. Steiner

If you ask Grace Meehan, student leader of  Mequon High School’s Kids4Kids, why her group is doing a collaborative arts project with children who are in foster care or youth aging out of the system, she’ll tell you it’s because there are a lot more similarities than differences among young people.

“People might have a bad connotation about kids in foster care,” she said, “but they’re still young like us, and they have bright futures.”

Kids4Kids, which raises money for and tries to increase awareness about foster care, has been involved since early this year in an undertaking called Project 3mpower. The project aims to build awareness in the public and camaraderie and self-confidence in the young people involved by artistically telling the story of foster life.

Under the guidance of instructors at the North Shore Academy of the Arts in Grafton, the Homestead students have been working along with children and young adults served by St. Aemilian-Lakeside, a 161-year-old social services organization in Milwaukee.

They have been creating a variety of artworks from painting and pottery to song, dance, drama and poetry. The works will be showcased at a culminating public event May 15 from 3:30 -5 p.m., at the Arts Mill Gallery & Boutique, 1300 14th Ave., Grafton.

The project hopes to change the way the public understands and responds to the needs of foster youth. The name 3mpower comes from the goal of empowering three populations: foster and non-foster kids and the public.

“This helps them to see it’s not a bad thing to be in foster care,” said Jeanetta Watson, who is part of a St. Aemilian-Lakeside Independent Living Services (ILS) program that helps youth leaving foster care successfully transition to adulthood. Jeanetta worked at the last session, April 10, on a painting that will illustrate many of the emotions she experienced while in foster care.

“They seem like a nice bunch of kids,” she said about the Homestead students. “They want to participate and they wanted to learn about my experiences in foster care and how I felt about it,” she said.

Some of her experiences were met with surprise, said Jeanetta, who was in nine foster homes from the time she was 3 until she was 16.  “But we talked about how you’ve got to not worry about the bad, think of the good, and go from there.”

Another young woman in an ILS program, Kaitlin Harris, said the questions posed to her were good because, “a lot of people don’t know what it’s like to be in foster care, so I pretty much told them everything: going house to house, being in shelters. And everybody’s experience in foster care is different.”

“It’s a great opportunity, because some of the kids (in foster care) still don’t have resources, places to go,” said Jeanetta. “There’s a need to speak out.”

Grant Brogan, a Homestead freshman, said he got involved in the project because it’s fun. “And it’s a way to reach out to a different community and to help others. And you’re making new friends.”

A 9–year-old boy named Julio who is being assisted by St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s Family  Preservation Services, said it was pretty cool working with Grant. “He looks like Justin Bieber!” he said with a laugh.

“No matter where you grow up, we all have common interests, and it’s good to find those common interests,” said Patrick Tucker, also a freshman at Homestead.

As Unique Wilson from the ILS program worked on writing a song, she said, “It’s about hope and faith, not giving up, always having hope for tomorrow being a better day.”

Unique and Joann Hogan, another former foster young person served by St. Aemilian-Lakeside,  worked with Angela Mack, a performing arts instructor, on creating the song. The two young women do lyrics and melody and Angela is putting it to music.

“It takes a lot of vulnerability to write a song like this and it takes a lot of trust,” Angela said. “This is a song of encouragement to all people who feel like giving up.”

All the young people involved in Project 3mpower are looking forward to sharing their creativity with the public on May 15. The event is free and will also feature shopping at the gallery. For more information, contact Karen Johnson, division director of Community Services at St. Aemilian-Lakeside, at 414-465-5734. For more information on foster care and a variety of services to youth who must leave the system when they turn 18, go to www.st-al.org.
