Tickets for our Stagekids Production CAMP ROCK and adult/youth production of HAIRSPRAY will be on sale for the general public on March 30.  Both shows will be packed into one fabulous musical weekend at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center.

CAMP ROCK Shows/Times:

Thursday May 5 at 6:30pm

Friday May 6 at 9:30am and 7:00pm

HAIRSPRAY Shows/Times:

Saturday May 7 9:30am, 1:00pm and 7:00pm

Saturday May 8 at 2:00pm (Take mom to lunch and a show!)

A Note from NSAA Founder and President

Paula sent out an invitation for volunteers to come to NSAA last Saturday and help with the Circle of Friends event. Circle of friends is a group of special needs individuals and we were providing them with opportunities in the arts.

I stood listening and watching for a while.  Parents bringing their children, young and not so young, into our academy. Teenagers, giving up their weekend afternoon to help. Our devoted staff, giving up holiday time with their families to give to other families.  I watched the singing, dancing and laughter down in the theatre room, the creating, and gluing and smiles in the art room. I saw the learning from one person to another. The honest giving and receiving from each individual involved.

 The afternoon was filled with unwrapping of all sorts.

Here are some of that gifts that I received:

that listening to someone shake the maraca while they laugh, is beautiful music.

that watching a teacher dance with enthusiasm and joy can get you  up out of your wheel chair to join along, even if the only way your feet can move to the rhythm is through your heart.

that while the list of “to dos” don’t get done when you come to an event such as this, their priority shifts. Dramatically.

that if you can’t express your joy through words, you can through music

that it pays to nurture your talents-because even at a young age you can mentor others

that even if it seems you aren’t painting or dancing or singing, in your own way, you’re experiencing art just as deeply

that teachers -especially those at NSAA, have a rare and unique gift of patience and giving and bringing out  the best in someone else by nurturing what’s within

that our old building, despite its shortcomings, is home for good things

and mostly, here is what I was given… the realization that we all have special needs, in one way or another. A need  to express ourselves in unique ways; to discover our talents.  To feel accepted for who we are and for being allowed to be true to what’s within.  And to have the opportunity to give, and to be given to.  

Paula and I stood together on the balcony as people were beginning to filter out.  The last event of the year, of the decade at NSAA, was coming to a close.  We stood in silence– after all these years of working together, little needed to be said. I know we were both thinking through the ups and the downs of the past  ten years–together with our team, all the trials of working on fixing up the facility, the financial challenges,  the journey of finding instructors, the endless editing of brochures, the shows produced, the classes taught, the late nights til three in the morning, the early mornings til late nights. At times, we’ve both had our doubts.

That afternoon shifted those doubts.  We shared the same thought,

“This is why..”

To all of you–Scott  and Paula, our amazing volunteers, staff, board members, artistic and advisory boards, parent committee members, parents, and families, kids and babies, the elderly,  visitors, CPAC, Hartford, Bayshore, our consultants, the Village of Grafton, Mequon Jewish Preschool, organizations we’ve teamed up with,  our donors, even those who have told us time and time again our bathroom is less than desirable and that they aren’t happy with auditions….thank you. We wouldn’t be here without you.

You are our circle of friends.

We look forward to the next ten years as our circle continues to grow.  We hope that together, we can honor the special needs of each other–

NSAA Stagekids Present Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. January 20-23 
 
NSAA Stagekids will present Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center (CPAC) January 20-23.  The 12:30pm matinee on 1/20 is already sold out leaving a 9:30am matinee on 1/20.

 
Other show times include 7pm on 1/21, 1pm and 7pm on 1/22 and 1pm on 1/23.  Tickets cost just $3 per child and $7 per adult.  The CPAC ticket box office number is 262.376.6161.  (Someone is usually in the box office M-F between 3 and 6pm.)
 
This time around, the leads will have a huge challenge.  Two casts (red and yellow) will be performing.  Each cast has a set of “leads”.  During the leads’ “off shows”, they will perform as chorus members.  Thus, all of our leads will be learning and performing two roles during the course of the weekend.  (This set-up is new to NSAA Stagekids.)

 The casts are made up of 75 kids total from the Southeastern WI region ranging between the ages of 5 and 14.  NSAA has also partnered up with the Schauer Arts and Activities Center in Hartford, WI to present the same show at their location January 14 and 15 with an entirely separate “Hartford” cast.

 
NSAA Stagekids has been around for ten years and has produced at least two major shows per year.  Debbie Knuth has recently been promoted to the position of Stagekids Community Coordinator and Angela Mack has been promoted to the position of Stagekids Marketing Director.

 
NSAA has recently expanded by offering performing arts opportunities to adults.  Our last 2010 Spring adult/youth production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” was a huge success.  Our 2011 Spring adult/youth production will be “Hairspray”.  Auditions will be February 2 at NSAA (must pre-register).

 
We will be taking registrations for our next Stagekids Production of “Camp Rock” at the Beauty and the Beast shows.  Auditions will be held on January 31 at NSAA (must preregister).   Details on how to register can be found on our website http://www.northshoreacademyofthearts.org

Moving into our next decade of programming, we are excited to not only work to expand our offerings but to  look closely at what we are currently doing and refine to make improvements.

Being a part time operating organization, we are constantly seeking the most timely, efficient means of communication in all areas to serve you best. We are making some changes within the office. One procedure you can expect is that if NSAA receives a call or voice mail during the weekdays, Monday through Thursday, it will be responded to by the end of the next business day by an office staff person.  

Additionally, Debbie Knuth has taken on the role of Stagekids Community Coordinator to answer all quesitons about any of our Stagekids shows. To reach someone most expediently, please use the following contacts. In addition, the office hours are posted below, so feel free to stop up in the office during those hours.

12 year old Mequon resident and NSAA Stagekids Alumni, Mari Duckler, is rapidly becoming well known throughout SE Wisconsin as a highly skilled young actress. She recently landed a professional acting position at the Fireside Dinner Theater in Fort Atkinson, WI. Mari will be the lead supporting role, “Pepper” in the Fireside’s upcoming production of Annie. The Fireside Dinner Theater attracts national audiences as a professional theater each year.

Mari first came to NSAA as a 9 year old seeking private vocal instruction with vocal coach, Angela Mack. From there, she auditioned for the NSAA Stagekids Production of High School Musical and was surprisingly cast as the lead role of “Sharpay Evans”. She was also “Lily St. Regis” (Annie) and “Phineous Trout” (Willy Wonka) through NSAA Stagekids.

Since then, Mari has performed at Homestead High School Auditorium, Range Line Auditorium, Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and has appeared in the film, “The Bully”.

Quite spectacular about Mari’s experience is that she was recently cast as the highly competitive and lead role “Junie B.” (Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business) at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

Mari will also soon be performing as “Ady” in Miss Nelson is Missing at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.  She is currently taking private tap/ballet at NSAA with Miss Kathleen Fictum so that she is a “triple threat” to the world of musical theater.  

Mari dreams of performing on Broadway someday.  At this rate, she just might!  Keep your eye on this petite and spunky soprano belter!

NSAA Jr. Stagekids will present “Disney’s Aladdin KIDS!” for the public on Monday August 30 at 5:00pm and 7:00pm.  A suggested donation will be taken at the door for admission at North Shore Academy of the Arts, 1111 Broad Street in Grafton.   There will be a “Green Cast” and “Purple Cast” of six to ten year olds from the southeastern Wisconsin region performing.    Each show lasts approximately 40 minutes and is produced and directed by Angela Mack.

The next production that the Jr. Stagekids will be presenting is “Schoolhouse ROCK!”.  Anyone wanting to sign up their six to ten year old can do so by registering online  at our website. Go to http://www.northshoreacademyofthearts.org to find other fall classes and events at NSAA.  

NSAA’s Jr. Stagekids program introduces very young children to the world of live theater complete with costumes, set, makeup, choreography, characterization, memorization and blocking.
