NSAA Jr. Stagekid Liora Bushee Gives Speech Near the White House

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Thousands competed.  But ten year old Liora Bushee won the award for the National Menorah Essay Contest. This incredible win landed her near the White House giving a speech to an audience of thousands.   The event was covered by CNN and can be seen 17 minutes into the video on this website.

Liora presented her speech, titled “Light” on the first day of Chanukah for the Annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony in Washington DC on Dec. 1.

She confidently spoke, “Light can easily overcome darkness.  The darkness is the bad and mean things in this world and light is happiness and joy.

You can read the rest of her essay HERE.

Liora has participated in several shows through the NSAA Jr. Stagekids program.  The goal of the Jr. Stagekids program is:

For those children who love to act, sing, and dance…this class is for you! Make friends and build self-confidence while learning to deliver lines, act in character, sing and perform choreographed moves!

We are very happy that Liora had the confidence and bravery to speak in front of such a large audience with clarity, feeling and perfect timing.

You see, we do more than just put on shows.   Our Peforming Arts Department helps DEVELOP LEADERS.   It’s our desire to develop “the leader within” each and every student….

NOW ENROLLING* for “How Does Your Garden Groove?”

Children will have a fun filled time movin’ and groovin’ in Freddy and Franny Farmer’s vegetable garden.  This is not your typical garden-variety musical as the french fried potatoes have “appeal”, leafy vegetables sing “Lettuce Entertain You” and the corn and peas beg “Please Don’t Put Us in a Can-Can!”

Our focus will be on the process:  gaining self-confidence, learning theatre skills and making new friends.  The class will culminate with a lively show on our very own NSAA stage.  There will be costumes, props, scenery, singing and dancing just like on the “big stage”!  Fun, fun and more fun!

Zumba Celebration Comes to NSAA

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Welcome to Zumba!

Zumba is a Latin-inspired, easy to follow, calorie burning, dance fitness party! It is a spicy, upbeat mixture of Salsa, Merengue, Samba, belly dancing, hop-hop and many other beats.

A NOTE FROM ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR MERLYNN KIMMEL…….

Dancing has always played a very important role in my life. I have a graduate and undergraduate degree in dance from UW-Madison. I have taught, been trained/certified and competed professionally in many styles from Jazz, Ballet and Zumba to Latin/Ballroom Dance. I have taught and choreographed for ages 2-82 at many dance studios in the area as well as Concordia College in Mequon and U.W. Madison. I have been involved in NSAA’s Dance/Theater program since it’s inception. I am most passionate about Zumba because the classes feel like a party that EVERYONE can join in on. Each class is a total body work-out with toning exercises that are more fun than they are work. And, Zumba requires NO previous dance experience.

North Shore Academy of the Arts has positively affected the lives of thousands of people over the ten years that it has been in existence. With my background and the comfortable/creative environment provided at NSAA, I felt it was the perfect place for Zumba to grow. The classes have been running for three weeks and already the energy at the Zumba classes has been exhilarating. We are bringing people of ALL fitness levels, ages and backgrounds together for a movement celebration. Come, take a class, the first class is FREE, feel the music, and let loose. The classes are ongoing, you can join anytime.

For more information please notify me. Mkimmel@earthlink.net .

First class is free.
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays. 9:15-10:15.
$6.00/drop in. $50.00/10 class punch card.
Bring a guest. You AND the guest can take the class for FREE.

Testimonials:

Stagekids Alumni Gets Hired to Act at Fireside Dinner Theater

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

12 year old Mequon resident and NSAA Stagekids Alumni, Mari Duckler, is rapidly becoming well known throughout SE Wisconsin as a highly skilled young actress. She recently landed a professional acting position at the Fireside Dinner Theater in Fort Atkinson, WI. Mari will be the lead supporting role, “Pepper” in the Fireside’s upcoming production of Annie. The Fireside Dinner Theater attracts national audiences as a professional theater each year.

Mari first came to NSAA as a 9 year old seeking private vocal instruction with vocal coach, Angela Mack. From there, she auditioned for the NSAA Stagekids Production of High School Musical and was surprisingly cast as the lead role of “Sharpay Evans”. She was also “Lily St. Regis” (Annie) and “Phineous Trout” (Willy Wonka) through NSAA Stagekids.

Since then, Mari has performed at Homestead High School Auditorium, Range Line Auditorium, Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and has appeared in the film, “The Bully”.

Quite spectacular about Mari’s experience is that she was recently cast as the highly competitive and lead role “Junie B.” (Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business) at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

Mari will also soon be performing as “Ady” in Miss Nelson is Missing at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.  She is currently taking private tap/ballet at NSAA with Miss Kathleen Fictum so that she is a “triple threat” to the world of musical theater.

Mari dreams of performing on Broadway someday.  At this rate, she just might!  Keep your eye on this petite and spunky soprano belter!
