NSAA Founder Announces a New “Sister Site” THE ARTS MILL

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

A Note from the Founder/President, Sheri Bestor

Our Performing Arts Department along with our StageKids shows have reached thousands of children and hundreds of families over the years. We are continuing to work on improving our performing arts offerings through developing our dance department, refining our StageKids curriculum and setting a goal of upgrading our theatre, music room and recording studio.

We are focussing our energies equally towards the Visual and Literary Arts Departments and are excited to move forward toward one of our goals of having studio and gallery space to showcase art work and host special events.

I am proud to announce the expansion to a brand new NSAA “sister site”, The Arts Mill, a division of NSAA.  This will be located in the Historic Grafton Mill on the second and third floors. Not only is the river setting beautiful but the historic character gives it an “East Side” or “Third Ward” feeling.  The new location is conveniently just a few blocks from NSAA and will help bring a focus of the arts to the Grafton area.

I am equally as proud to announce that NSAA   Programming Director, Paula Christensen is taking on the position and title of Director of this site. Her background, talents and experience in the visual arts will be an integral part of the success of this development along with the fantastic team of staff, board members and volunteers at NSAA.

Ten years ago, we began NSAA at the Historic Grafton Mill.  We have come full circle to reside there once again, as we move into our second decade of service to our community.  We are especially grateful to the Village of Grafton, Kapco, Neil Willenson and others who have and are supporting us in this journey.

The current Broad Street facility will remain the home site of NSAA. The new facility will contain an emphasis on the visual arts, special events and will be available to cooperating organizations such as Balancing Arts and other community groups.

While we are excited for this venture, we realize that this growth is not only a wish but a necessity. Due to the current economic climate, NSAA is struggling in ways it hasn’t before. We believe this expansion of The Arts Mill will not only help offer much needed opportunities to the community but will aid in helping NSAA move to the next level. Please stay tuned for updates on this project.

We are looking forward to working together to make NSAA a strength to the community for years to come.   If you’d like to get involved or are interested in studio space please contact Paula paulac@northshoreacademyofthearts.org

Thank you for your continued support.

NSAA Collaborates Yet Another Summer with Bayshore Town Center

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Communities that embrace the arts are known to experience quality of life. This is why North Shore Academy of the Arts (NSAA) has been honored to have collaborated with Bayshore Town Center for several years now.  This has been JUST ONE of the exciting collaborations that has been a “win/win” for the arts, business, and community!

Throughout the past several years, we have provided exciting performing arts venues such as “Broadway at Bayshore”.   Our Visual Arts Department has been involved with beautifying the outdoor courtyard and fountain space with our “Table for Two” restoration project.  We have been fully engaged in the Bayshore Town Center Chalk Festival, provided creative window displays for stores, and have provided summer weekly workshops for “Square Kids”.  Many of the Bayshore guests especially enjoyed our “Artists in Motion” weekly visiting artist workshops.

This summer, you will find visually stimulating benches and tables created by some of our most notable artists.  And every Tuesday from 11:30 to 1:30, bring the kids to the food court area for “Square Kids” FREE ART PROJECTS provided by NSAA and more!  Also stop and say “hi” at this year’s Bayshore Town Center Chalk Festival August 21!

          Visiting Artist Series featuring :

Andy Berggren

Andy began his journey as a photographer while earning a Bachelor of Arts in Radio-TV-Film at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After graduating, he came to Milwaukee in pursuit of a career in video production. While continuing to work on his photography portfolio he soon realized that this was where his true passion lies. While specializing in architectural and fine art photography he continues to cover all aspects of the medium. His re-creation of famous images through the use of LEGO has gained attention and defined him as an innovative and unique photographer.

Adrienne Dyer

Two of my great loves in life are travel and photography. I eagerly stumbled upon my choice of subject as a recent high school graduate. Not realizing how big a part of my life photography would become, I initially took photos of places that were foreign to me as a way to journal my life. That focus quickly changed into a passion for photographing the adventure of difference experiences. The anticipation of the unknown, and the thrill I get when I find a new perspective on a culture inspire me.

M Randall

I find myself looking for that unique shot that digs deeper into the obvious.  It is usually a close-up that reveals details of an object or setting that is most often missed or unattainable by a passing glance.  I am attracted to weather related opportunities, in which the subject or objects can vanish rapidly.  I consider myself a “new-purist” who enjoys digital photography, but keeps photo manipulation to a minimum if any at all.

James Prinz

James Prinz is a 1979 graduate of Grafton High School. He received a BFA from UW-Milwaukee in 1986 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1988. Mr. Prinz founded James Prinz Photography in 1987 and works internationally photographing artwork for museums, universities, galleries, collectors and artists. He has had work published in many catalogues, books and also numerous international magazines and newspapers. James Prinz was the staff photographer at the Museum of Contemporary Art In Chicago from 1989 until 1995. He was the principal photographer with the Mellon International Dunhuang Archive at Northwestern University and has traveled to China 15 times to photograph Buddhist caves in the Gobi Desert. His duties with the project also included teaching advanced photographic techniques to members of the Dunhuang Research Academy as well as members of the Cultural Relics Bureau in Beijing. Currently Mr. Prinz has been collaborating with Chicago artist, Nick Cave, and has photographs and videos being exhibited in Cave’s traveling museum exhibition, “Meet Me art the Center of the Earth”. When not photographing artwork for others, James Prinz produces his own landscape photography. Mr. Prinz resides in Chicago with his wife and children.

Local Artist to be Featured at 3rd Annual NSAA Showcase

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

NSAA is proud to introduce the works of Tracy Tamel Heerhold at our 3rd Annual Showcase!  Please join us for this great networking event!

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:

The combination of photography and digital painting allows Tracy Heerhold to not only preserve a moment in time, but also to enhance those moments with a creative vision as well.

Tracy’s love of photography stems from her interest in a variety of subjects including rural landscapes, seasonal conditions, travel and historic architecture. Whenever possible, Tracy enjoys the thrill of taking photos of the same locations in different seasons to fully appreciate them throughout the year.

Tracy lives in Jackson, WI and has been involved in digital art and photography for a number of years.  She always looks forward to the next opportunity she will have to capture a moment in time.

Tracy is a member of the Cedarburg Artist Guild and currently has work on display at locations in Cedarburg, West Bend and Hartland, Wisconsin.  She also had her first solo show at Mosquito Hill Nature Center in New London, WI from December 5th 2009 through February, 2010. Prior locations for her work also included the Center for Visual Arts, a juried gallery and shop as well as Evolutions in Design, both in Wausau, Wisconsin.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTWORK:

Tracy’s artwork combines both photography and digital painting, which is essentially painting by using software on a computer.  Tracy uses the digital painting component to fully achieve a vision that she has in mind upon noticing and experiencing a subject through a camera lens.
